Objective
To design a book that highlights the legacy of Black jockeys and trainers in horse racing based upon supplied text from the Kentucky Derby Museum.
Having been given the copy, this was going to be a very text-heavy book, but my goal was to not make it seem so overwhelmed with type. Breaking up the body text was the best way to achieve this. Although, in order to create an effective approach, I gave emphasis to typographic areas, supplemented accent colors, embraced white space, and used images to my advantage within a 6 column variational grid.
My use of yellow represents Churchill Downs, symbolizing the Twin Spires. While red represents the history and a symbolization of the Kentucky Derby award winning Roses.
